Ministerial Board on Deaths in Custody

The first-tier of the Council consists of a Ministerial Board on Deaths in Custody, which replaced the Ministerial Roundtable on Suicide and has wider terms of reference to include all types of death in state custody.  This covers deaths which occur in prisons, in or following police custody, immigration detention, the deaths of residents of approved premises and the deaths of those detained under the Mental Health Act (MHA) in hospital.   The principles and lessons learned as part of this work will also apply to the deaths of those detained under the Mental Capacity Act in hospital.

The Ministerial Board brings together decision-makers responsible for policy and issues related to deaths in custody in the Ministry of Justice, Home Office and Department of Health. Other organisations represented on this Board include:

Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO)

Care Quality Commission (CQC)
