IAP publishes statistical analysis of deaths between 2000 and 2012

We have published the third statistical report into deaths in custody – covering the period 2000-2012. The Panel has a commitment to publishing a statistical analysis of all deaths in state custody for each calendar year as data becomes available. For a number of reasons publication of this report has been delayed. However, work has already commenced to produce figures for 2013 later this year. 549 deaths in custody were recorded for 2012. As previously, the report shows a breakdown of all recorded deaths in the following sectors:

  • Prisons and Young Offender Institutes (YOIs)

  • Police

  • Immigration Removal Centres

  • Approved Premises

  • Secure Children’s Homes (SCHs)

  • Secure Training Centres (STCs)

  • Whilst not specifically a custodial sector, the report also contains data on the deaths of patients who died in hospitals whilst detained under the Mental Health Act (MHA).

 This report contains data, where available, on the following:

  • Natural cause deaths broken down by age, gender and ethnicity;

  • Self-inflicted deaths broken down by age, method, gender and ethnicity;

  • Homicides broken down by age, gender and ethnicity;

  • Restraint related deaths broken down by age, gender and ethnicity;

  • Other causes of death broken down by gender.
