Independent Review of Deaths and Serious Incidents in Police Custody

Dame Angiolini's report into deaths and serious incidents in police custody was published on 30 October 2017. The review looked at the wide range of circumstances around deaths and serious incidents in police custody and of suicides occurring shortly after release from police custody. It involved examination of events from the initial restraint or other circumstances preceding the death, through the investigation and Inquest to the outcome of the formal investigative processes.     Juliet Lyon, IAP Chair stated: 'The IAP welcomes Dame Elish Angiolini's far-reaching review of deaths in custody. We will work to help ensure that her recommendations are implemented - in particular that avoidable deaths are indeed avoided and that lessons are learned and do not have to be reiterated time and again. The IAP pays tribute to all those who contributed to the review especially the families who generously drew on experience of personal tragedy in order to save other families from suffering in future.'
