NPIA guidance on responding to mental health issues

The National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) on behalf of the Assciation of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and in close consultation with the Department of Health have produced guidance on responding to individuals with mental health issues. Given that police officers and staff are often the gateway to appropriate care - whether of a criminal justice or healthcare nature - it is essential that people with mental ill health or learning disabilities are recognised and assisted by officers from the very first point of contact. The development of this guidance provides an opportunity for the police to engage in meaningful dialogue with other agencies operating in the field of mental health and criminal justice.
