UK NPM launch their first annual report

The UK National Prevention Mechanism (NPM) have published their first annual report on the 8th February 2011. The NPM was established following the UK’s ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT). The role of the NPM is to visit all places of detention and monitor the treatment of and conditions for detainees. The UK’s NPM is made up of 18 organisations from across the UK who visit or inspect places of detention including prisons, police custody, children’s secure accommodation and immigration, military and mental health detention.
