IAPDC publishes mid-term report

The IAPDC has today published its mid-term report.

This comes ahead of a full report in autumn 2022, when current chair, Juliet Lyon CBE, steps down.

The report outlines the work carried out by the panel since Juliet’s reappointment in September 2019.

As part of the commitment to deliver clear, independent expert advice to ministers, the panel have worked in collaboration with partners to produce key pieces of work, whilst continuing to influence Parliament, the media and online sources.

Since my reappointment as chair in September 2019, I am proud of the clear, independent expert advice that the panel has provided to ministers, departments and agencies on how they can meet their duty to protect the lives of people in their care. In the face of unprecedented challenges, the panel recognises and supports the considerable work that is done to prevent deaths in custody. The burden of responsibility for the safety of those in custody during COVID19 will have weighed particularly heavily. However, we believe more can, and must, be done to keep people safe and to avoid the devastation and cost, in every sense, of each loss of life.
