The Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody (IAPDC), in collaboration with National Prison Radio (NPR), undertook a project to gather views from people in prison on their feelings about – and concerns about – emerging from lockdown.

As prisons get to grips with the second wave of Covid-19, the Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody (IAPDC) has published prisoners’ insightful ideas on active steps that can be taken to improve their safety during and after the pandemic.

The IAPDC has released a new report in partnership with National Prison Radio, giving a unique insight into the experiences of those detained in prisons during the COVID-19 crisis.

Government response to COVID-19 (September 2020)

The panel drew attention to the MoJ’s failure to adequately deliver on their promises for the End of Custody Temporary Release and compassionate release schemes in prisons during COVID-19. We called for the government to take account of the views of those detained, as well as the recommendations of robust independent scrutiny, as establishments emerged from lockdown and extreme detention. The JCHR referenced the IAPDC evidence in their response.
